Well, this is a sad fucking day.

Not only is an election being won by a puffed up buffoon with tiny hands and massive insecurities but the people who are supposed to make sense of this chaos have decided to take leave of their reason and blame the whole thing on bigotry.

But that doesn’t make sense.

America has a problem with bigotry, sure. But it’s not like the place suddenly got more bigoted over the past few years.

No, this election wasn’t won by bigotry.

It was lost by elitism, from both the Democrats and the Republicans.  continue reading…

Friends, in the wake of the recent atrocity in France our collective conversation has again been dominated by discussions around Islam.

Inevitably claims that Islam causes terrorism will be espoused by people who failed maths at school, and Richard Dawkins (but more on that later).

And the discussion of the potential link inevitably segues into talk about Sharia law, forcing people to wear burkas, and homophobia.

It has taken me far too long to work out precisely what this style of argument is actually trying to do, and for that I apologise.

But I’m back now, and I’m pretty confident that I can demonstrate that a lot of the people who argue in that style are desperately trying to cover up the fact that they just don’t like Muslims.

Friends, in the wake of the recent spate of mass shootings (which are of course different and far more newsworthy than the regular everyday shootings, for some reason) I’ve decided to weigh in on the gun control debate.

It has been noted that the USA is the only country outside of a war zone where mass shootings of civilians regularly take place and that increasing gun control by at least a little bit is a no-brainer.

Opponents of gun control have responded by saying that this is all deflection and that the real scandal is the USA’s lack of effective mental healthcare.

After all, they say, guns don’t kill, it’s people who are the problem.

But the thing is that not only is that claim deeply misleading, it actually makes a very strong case for more gun control.
