CDO act

This one is for the psychologists.

I just blew my own mind. Again.

What if Nymphomania is just Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?

In other words what if the individual Nymphomaniac feels under obsessive levels of stress and responds to that stress with a compulsion to have sex? Fundamentally there is no difference between that and someone who is obsessed with household safety and so they check that they’ve locked the front door, five times.

Those of you who know about such things may respond that “nymphomania” doesn’t exist any more. These days we call it “sex addiction” and it is thought to be no different from any other addiction.

This is a worthy thought. But it doesn’t mean I’m wrong, it just means that only half of the things we call “addictions” are actually addictions; the others are Obsessive Compulsion.

What I mean by this is that some addictions (like heroin addiction) have a distinctly chemical pay off, and are accompanied by powerful physiological withdrawal symptoms. These are the real addictions.

Other “addictions” have a more mental pay off. I mean it’s really hard to try and justify the idea that Internet Addiction contains some sort of powerful neurochemical “rush”. But what it does have is a mental pay off: the reduction of stress.

This is remarkably similar to the pay off experienced when someone acts on an Obsessive Compulsion.

At their heart the Compulsions that OCD sufferers experience are ways to alleviate stress, right? So, if I’m right, then many addictions are actually just unusual Compulsions to go with quite normal Obsessions.

It has already come up in the literature that Internet Addiction is often a deliberate attempt to distract one from the stresses of one’s life. So it’s an Obsessive need to Compulsively surf the ‘Net.

In what way is that different from OCD? They are both attempts to find something that takes one’s attention away from a stressor.

Maybe I’m wrong, but to me this is definitely worth thinking about.
