The Venus Project’s response to this is to claim (absolutely correctly) that greed is the biggest evil facing our world at the moment (but that doesn’t solve the problem) and then to say that through education the desire for “more” can be eliminated.
Hang on.
“Fixing” this “problem” through “education”? Guys…is this REALLY the best way to convince people that this isn’t just a form of Communism?
The problem with using education to deal with social ills is the same as it’s always been: if you use an approach that is 100% effective then that isn’t education, it’s brainwashing! And that’s just wrong.
And if you use an approach that is just education then there is no way for it to convince everyone.
So what do you do with those who refuse to accept what society wants, and selfishly wish to be rewarded for their efforts? There are two possibilities that I can think of. Either those who desire more will be labelled “abhorrent” and put into camps away from everyone else or you allow them to remain, but simply work your ass off to make sure that they never succeed in their attempts to get more than anyone else.
Basically, you either separate them from society or you make sure that their desires can never be fulfilled.
In either case: congratulations, you’re a fascist.
Yes, better education might encourage more people to recognise the stupidity and emptiness of greed. But there will always be some people who disagree, and want more stuff. And even if they are wrong they have a right to feel that way and a right to try and fulfill that need.
Of course, they do not have a right to do it as the expense of others, but the Venus Project doesn’t seem to want people to do their own thing, even in isolation.
You see under the Project no one would be allowed to leave society and set up their own country because everything in the whole world belongs to everyone. Wherever you go everything you see is owned by the State. The Venus Project would never look at it in those terms but that is basically what it boils down to: telling people what they can and cannot do, because you think you have a right to be in charge.
And if you don’t give people the right to disagree then all you are doing is forcing them to submit to an ideology that you THINK is better than theirs.
Our society has huge problems, and yes, it does ram its own selfist, capitalist, pseudo-democratic ideology down everyone’s throats, whether they want it or not. But replacing that with another system, however well meaning, that does exactly the same thing from a different direction, cannot be a solution.
The Venus Project is a really, really bad idea, unless it can alter human nature, without violating human rights. This may indeed be possible, and if they figure it out, I hope they let me know.
