I mean day-glo pants with that shirt? Puhleeeze!

For those of you who are joining late Ann Coulter is a 50 year old, extremely right wing, talking head in the ‘States.

For a brief highlight of her beliefs go here and watch the first video clip.
In this clip Ann Coulter (ACou) says that if everyone listened to her America would be far more tolerant and free because EVERYONE WOULD BE CHRISTIAN. She even goes on to say that all the Jews would be converted to Christianity and thus be “perfected” (yes, that’s a direct quote).

For another direct quote check out this beauty:

“These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, revelling in their status as celebrities and stalked by griefparrazies. I have never seen people enjoying their husband’s deaths so much.”
-on 9/11 widows who have been critical of the Bush administration.

See what you did? You made the panda wtf. I hope you’re happy.

So anyway, I recently read an article on her website about Obama’s healthcare plan. And I’m not going to dwell on the fact that every other industrialised nation has a national healthcare system that works far better than the current American system, it’s just too easy. What I would like to do is look at some of her claims, and the way she makes them. I will not be talking about all the claims she makes, a small number of which might even be true. I shall be talking about the things she says that are not true. If you would like to read her article in its entirety then I suggest you go to her website.
The things she says will be in italics and my responses will not.
Moreover, Medicare payments aren’t enough to pay the true cost of those medical services it does cover. With Medicare undercutting payments to hospitals and doctors for patients 65 and older, what keeps the American medical system afloat are private individuals who are not covered by Medicare paying full freight (and then some). That’s why you end up with a $10 aspirin on your hospital bill.

Wait, I’m confused. Those pill prices are not set by the government they are set by the hospitals and the medical schemes. ACou is basically claiming that because hospitals have to “cheaply” treat senior citizens on Medicare, hospitals and medical insurers are forced to raise prices for everyone else, because it’s the only way they can survive.

There are 2 problems with this:
1) The government already heavily subsidises hospitals. They aren’t forcing the hospitals to pay for seniors it’s the government that is paying for them.
2) If it was true that insurance companies were forced to raise their prices to cover senior citizens, just to break even, then why have they all recorded massive profits for decades in a row?

The truth is those pills cost the earth because the health insurers, the AMA and the hospitals are in league with one another, and raise the prices to increase profits. Let’s check shall we? When they raised their prices, did their profits go up? Oh look! I’m right.

Money can buy hugs, but only crappy, insincere ones.

National health care will eliminate everything outside of Medicare, which is the only thing that allows Medicare to exist.

Ummm no. The national healthcare will be added to the market as just one more player. The new legislation isn’t going to remove anything.
The funny thing is I think she is right, in a way. I think that the other healthcare providers are going to be eviscerated by the new healthcare system. Why? Because it will be far better than anything they can provide. Think about it. The only reason the insurance companies are unhappy about the new system is because it will cost them money, Business Rule Number 1, right? And since the new system is only being added to the market without anything being taken away the ONLY way it can be a threat to them is if people see that it is better, and sign up for it, thus reducing the insurance companies’ client base.

So ACou is trying to push yet another version of the “Oh no! Obama’s healthcare plan is going to work like a charm and provide healthcare to millions! Woe is me!” argument.

Still not convinced? Day after day, The New York Times has been neurotically asserting that national health care won’t cover illegal aliens (without ever explaining how precisely it will exclude illegal aliens).
So far, just this week, these Kim Jong Il-style pronouncements have appeared in the Treason Times:
— “Illegal immigrants will be covered. (Myth)” — Katharine Q. Seelye, “Myth vs. Fact vs. Other,” The New York Times, Sept. 2, 2009

Well I’ve read some of the articles the NY Times has had and some of them explain very clearly why illegal Americans won’t get coverage. It’s because the bill EXPRESSLY STATES:
Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.”

Furthermore about half of the illegals in the US ALREADY HAVE HEALTHCARE BECAUSE THEY PAY FOR IT YOU ‘NANA! Check Factcheck.org

If ACou is claiming that some illegal Americans will slip through the cracks and get healthcare meant for tax payers then she is absolutely right, and completely irrelevant. Things that occur outside the system are beyond the responsibility of the system. All the policy makers can do is set policy, and they have done that.

Or perhaps she is claiming that they should be denied emergency care. And if that’s the case then all I can say is “You’re a heartless fool. I hope you realise this, late one Sunday night.”
